DAVID PATRICK sports editor
of Texas A&I's South Texan stu
dent newspaper fashioned the fin- !
ish for his own winning sports
story Monday night.
This G-5 follow scribe pounds
out tho copy to publicize A&I
athletic groups and after viewing
tho HPC-A&I basketball game
Monday night we're dead certain
his clutch scoring kept the Hogs
ahead even though he wasn't their
leading scorer.
Meshing 15 points for tho game
Patrick hit nine in tho final half
and it seemed that each came at
a vital moment. Playing with four
personal fouls during tho final 11
minutes of play ho was still able
to maintain his cage dignity and
manufacture eight points.
With the game tied at -17-all
Patrick lifted in a side shot to give
A&I a lead the Hoggies never re-
linquished. Ahead Gl-59 with 1:02 left to
play Patrick again stepped to tho
line to notch a free toss and ex-
tend A&I's lead to three points
and seconds later with A&I load-
ing 62-01 he dropped a pair of freo
shots to completely douso HPC's
hopes for winning. To ice tho cake
he hit another free flip with 12
seconds remaining to extend tho
Pigs' lead to 65-63.
Convinced?
If sportswriters have any par-
ticular flare for beating tho ma-
ples then this writer perhaps
should sharpen up an old left-handed
hook shot which for some rca-
Kon unbeknownst to us never be-
came really polished in high school.
However we doubt that we'd
ever have tho knack for tho cago
sport which Patrick possesses and
might even he prone to point out
all tho good and exclude the had
concerning our cage aspirations.
It's hopeless let's forget the whole
thing.
SATl'ItDAY NHJIIT WAS un-
doubtedly the most embarrassing
in many moons for HPC's cage
contigent in San Marcos. In our
books 11-I-G7 is really a cago
shellacking and that's what
SWTSTC did to Howard Payne.
One prediction: Southwest Texas
will romp past St. Mary's University
In tho first two games of a best
two of three series and will go
far- perhaps to the championship
in the N'AIA championship tourna-
ment in Kansas City.

Coach J. H. (Cap) Shelton be-
ginning his 39th year as head
track master at Howard Payne
College Is no pessimist hut ho
will agree that a couple of twists
of fate have cast an ominous cloud
on HPC's 1959 track picture.
The first stroke of had luck
came back in October when Alfred
Holcomli ace discus hurler suf-
fered a serious knee injury in a
grid contest witn Southwest Texas
State. Though the injury is healing
gradually Holcomb has elected to
sit out the cinder season and con-
serve his discus efforts until next
spring.
Shelton thought ho had his dis
cus problems partially solved when
big Tiffen Stone who advanced to!ViulU: fl('m' Smith Kermit and
the state finals in the discus throw
last spring for Midland High
School enrolled at Howard Payne.
However surgery in Dig Spring
Saturday canceled Stone's discus
aspirations for tho current track
season and loaves HPC without a
single discus or shotput hopeful.
In Holcomb's sophomore season
last spring he re-wrote the old
discus record of 150'2Vj" with a
lGl'GVi" whirl and took second
with n 4S'llVi" shotput effort in
the Lone Star Conference meet at
San Marcos where the Jackets
racked up 37 points to finish
second behind champion East Tex-
as State which accumulated 58 13
points.
Holcomb let fly with a 161'11"
discus toss to take second last
June in tho NAIA meet hold in
San Diego Cal. bowing only to
national champion Al Oertcr.
And Stone has shown similar
possibilities In pre-season discus
work. He's been posting distances
between 110 and 151 feet and ac-
cording to Shelton "is one of
HPC's best all-time freshman
prospects."
"We just don't have anyone to
close the slack in the weight
events now that Stone is out for
the season" Shelton explains
"Hut we hope to do pretty well in
some other events."
"Pretty well" in "Cap" Shol-
ton's book Is "great" In common
cinder vernacular.
For example the Jackets have
two of the four boys back who
swept all four places in the SSO
last year at the conference meet.
Captain Hobby Pullig Hobbs. Tex.
who won first place in the event
with a 1:53.2 performance is back
for his senior cinder season along
second and will be out for his
junior year of track.
Graduates from the track scene
at Howard Payne are last year's
captain Don Shepard Louie Hayes
and Hoyce Denton all of whom
were distance dandies. Only other
loss is Earl Hrymer who was in-
ducted by tho draft. Shepard
clicked off a 9:09.5 in the two-
mile run last summer to re-writo
tho NAIA record at San Diego.
For tho first time in several
seasons the Jackets will field en-
tries in tho dashes. Dohie Craig
freshman transfer from Baylor
University who is still shooting
baskets on tho cago team and
sophomore Don Leo transfer from
Cisco Junior College will enter
tho 100 and 220-yard dashes for
tho Payno crow.
Looking at entries in individual
events: Two-mile run: Lyndon
Gnthright Morton and Harold
Hammer Dos Moines Iowa. One-
mile run: Wilbur Myers Rocholle;
Haul Halderrama Prownwood and
Dale liyorly Coleman. 880-yard
run: Hobby Pulllg Hobbs Tex.;
David Xoblo Odessa freshman and
Stan Owen Hurkburnett in what
will probably be HPC's strongest
event again this year.
Also lin-yard dash: Dickie Den-
son Froeport and Carbon fresh-
man .lames Morrow. High and low
hurdles: (Jury Petross Prownwood
and James and Jerry Keel twins
from Clifton. Hroad jump: Jerry
Hob Hutton Prownwood. Javelin:
Mickey Walker. San Antonio. Pole
Dorman Kiddle Hrady freshman
The Paynomcn will have no en-
tries in the discus shotput or high
jump.
The Jackets should again be
strong in the 410-yard relay mile
and two-mile relay and the dis-
tance medley hut members of
these units will not be determined
until times arc available for sepa-
rate individual performers later in
tlie season.
Of the returning cindermen
Gnthright Myers. Pullig Owen
Deiison Hutton and Smith nro
lottermen.
Last year HPC's mile-relay
team composed of Deiison Owen
Shepard and Pullig swept to first
place In the conference meet with
a 3:19.1 timing.

Making almost all field goals

the second half. Southwest Texas
State's Hobcats soared to a new
scoring record and at least a tie
for the Lone Star Conference cage
hunting here Saturday night as
they whammed Howard Payne
111-07.
The win. SWT's eleventh in as
many conference starts was its
35th consecutive win in its new
gymnasium and it's still yet to
be beaten there.
The 1 1 1 -point output erased (lie
old school scoring record of III"
points set against lll'C in lit.VJ
when SWT won lO.'.-fiil.
The Hobcats were phenomenal
in tho second half when starters
and subs hit with amazing field
goal accuracy. Tho Hobcats meshed
29 of 15 field goals attempted to
completely break open what ap
peared to be a defensive game in
the first half.
Pig gun in tho SWT attack was

HPC started off as if in line for
an easy win.i The Jackets jumped
to n 7-0 command before the Javs
scratched but the count knotted
at 12-12 S:21 deep in the game.
Holding ii 3G-2S intermission
lead tlie Jackets couldn t liny n
point until 5:21 deep in tb
second chukker Rogers hit a free
throw. Meanwhile. A&I had scored
11 to take a 39-37 lead. The Jackets
gained a 12-12 tie. and forged
ahead 17-12. However the .luve -
linas soared to a 19-17 command
and were never headed in the
final seven minutes.
Though the Hogs held a . 17
rebounding command board con-
trol was secondary in the complete
game picture. McMuhun and (o
led HIT rebounding with l.'i and
13 each respectively.
It was poor field shooting which
hurt the Jackets. HPC hit 21 of ill
attempts for a 31.1 percentage
wliile A&l was doing somewhat
better canning 23 of Gl for a
35.9 mark.
The Jackets made good on 21 of
30 free tosses; A&I hit 21 of 31.
