The Yellow Jackets havo their
work cut out for them for the
next two weeks. First they tackle
Lamar Tech co-leader of th-
conference in Beaumont Sat r--day
night th"n they travel to
HuntrAille the following wc-k to
contest Sam Houston's Ecarka.:;.
The Bearkats an.l Cardinrls
proved very little two week-; ago
as they fought to a 7-7 deadlock
in Kuntsvillc giving thorn equal
leadership in the conference.
The conference kingpins will
be the Jackets' best friends fo
the next couple of games but on
different nights. The Kats will
be pulling for HPC against La-
mar Tech and the Cardinals w:ll
wish the Jackets equal succes-
the following week end aam t
Sam Houston State.
INJURIES STILL loom as the
biggest question mark for the up-
coming game. Should the Jacket?
on the doubtful list turn in gooJ
performances HPC could pull an
upset equal to Texas' 17-0 win
over Aikansas.
It's nothing but good to know
that Boyd Murphy will get hi-
first chan'.e xo display his grid-
iron wares in the Lamar Tech
game. If hLs ankle permits he
will give the Jackets that added
offensive power which they have
lacked so far this season.
WE HOPE THE student body
will join the caravan to Eeau-
mont Saturday. The Jackets will
need all support available in o.--der
to make a good showing
against the Red Birds. It's going
to take a lot of exuberant yeil-
ing to out-cheer the 7000 Lamar
Tech students.
Grid Prophets
Start Guessmg
The Yellow Jacket's fearless
forecasters weathered another
blustery week end with upsets
popping up on several grid
scenes. Who'da thought Texas
woud have whitewashed Arkan-
sas 17-0? This is but one of the
upset games. However the prog-
nosticates did predict four win-
ners in eight games. They missed
three games and Lamar Tech
and Sam Houston battled to a
7-7 deadlock.
The prophets couldn't agree on
how to choose the winners for
this week end. One wanted to
draw straws another wanted to
put the team names on a board
and throw darts but both of
these ideas were discarded. The
third suggestion was eagerly ac-
cepted by the predictors. It was
to play a blindfold game called
"Pin the Tail on the Winner!"
Here is this week's fearless
forecast:
SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE
Mississippi 9 Arkansas 7 Do
not laugh. After the Hogs' loss
to Texas last week undefeated
Ole Miss should turn the trick
this week end.
Rico 26 Texas 20 Believe po-
tent Owl offense will carry them
by the Longhorns.

joyed considerable success in this
endeavor appearing in top-flight
rodeos in Miami Okla. and Fort
Worth. His main events are bull
riding and bareback bronc riding.
Bob was tagged with the nick-
name "Bobo" during his fresh-
man year here. Accused by up-
perclassmen Leland Maples and

Queried as to his greatest

easy. It's been beating ACC all

best team the Jackets Lav faced

Yellow
Don Martin Earns
Starting Position
By BILL GOFORTH
One of the pleasant surprises
for the blue and gold this year is
Don (Bird Dog) Martin whose
fine gridiron performances have
won him a starting position at
right end.
Don acquired his unusual nick-
name during his freshman year
at HPC when he accompanied
two upperclassmen on a dove
hunt. Since this was the busiest
season for bird dogs and most
of them charged union rates Don
was "asked" to assume the men-
ial chore of retrieving the game.
He has been called "Bird Dog"
more since then than by his cor-
rect name
Don was born March 27 1938
at Stamford. His parents Mr. and .
Mrs. O. T. Martin still live in
that city where his father is a
salesman.
His years in public schools
were equally divided among Pe-
cos Sherman Denison and Cisco
before the family returned to i
Stamford where he spent his last
three high school years.
It was during his senior year
at SHS that his football team'
