Dr. Basden Installs
New BSD Council
Dr. James Basden pastor ad-
visor installed the Baptist Stu-
dent Union Council during ves-
pers recently.
The informal service was con-
ducted in the formal parlor of
the women's dormitory.
Dr. Basden's speech included
three incidents demonstrated by
the Apostle Peter: power cour-
age and confidence. .
Pat Melton presented the spec-
ial music.

24 Are Initiated
Into Alpha Chi
Twenty-four Howard Payne
College students were initiated
Friday into Alpha Chi honor so-
ciety including the top ten per
cent scholastically of the junior
and senior classes.
With the six holdover mem-
bers from last year the new in-
itiates bring the society's total
membership to 30 for the semes-
ter. "In my opinion this is the high-
est honor that can come to you
at Howard Payne" said Dr. Z. T.
Huff academic dean who had
officially notified the members
earlier in the week by letter in-
viting them to the initiation meet-
ing and party in the Bell Club
Room of the library.
New members from the junior

Dr. Gordon Clinard of the
Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary. Fort Worth will

Football Season
At San Marcos
A musical salute to the football
-cason was the half-time enter-
:ainment presented by the 55
members of the Yellow Jacket
Band during the HPC - SWTS
conference game in San Marcos
last Saturday night.
This performance marked the
band's first official appearance
under the directorship of Mr. Ed-
win Cain.
To the strains of "Football He-
ro" the figure of a football play-
er was formed in the center of
the field. Secondly the cheer
leaders were given recognition by
the formation of a megaphone.
"Oh You Beautiful Doll" fea-
tured the formation of a major-
tte complete with rhythm step.
Last the blue-and-gold-clad band
members formed a star and gave
out with "The Eyes of Texas"
in commemoration of Howard
Payne's first official year in the
Lone Star Conference.
Melvin Russell a senior from
San Antonio will lead the band
as drum major this year.
Twirlers 'include Janice Ford
freshman from Olton; Peggy Rat-
liff sophomore from Comanche
and Marilyn Brown freshman
from San Antonio.
Flag bearers are Betty Bocdek-
er freshman from Stamford and
Earlene Offholter freshman from
San Antonio.
Search Under Way for
1958 'Maid of Cotton'
The National Cotton Council
has announced that the search
for the 1958 Maid of Cotton is of-
ficially under way.
To be eligible to be Maid of
Cotton a girl must have been
born in a cotton-producing state
must be between the ages of 19
and 25 at least five feet five
inches tall and must never have
been married. She will serve as
fashion and goodwill representa-
tive for the cotton industry.
Entry blanks for the contest
may be obtained from the Nation-
al Cotton Council P.O. Box 9905
Memphis 12 Tenn.
Co-ed emblem on the jacket.
They will make their first ap-
pearance at the football game on
Saturday night and afterwards
at a chicken fry which will be
given by the Co-eds.
The chicken fry will be given
for the Co-eds football players
cheer leaders and their dates.
The supper will be at the home
of Torrence Corbett.
Committees selected to prepare
for the chicken fry are the deco-
rations committee consisting of
Mary Etta Lawrence Virginia
Cross ' Vivian Pursley and Ann
McCurry and the food commit-
tee consisting of Eddis Tindall
Betty Bray and Peggy Pate.
'La Boheme'
Rehearsals Start
The Opera Workshop under
the direction of Dr. William Har-
grave is now under way in the
production of the opera "La Bo-
heme." There are approximately
40 students comprising the chorus
and principal roles. Mr. Jim
Woodle is preparing the choruses
while the principals are being
drilled by Dr. Hargrave.
Those singing the leading roles
are C. T. Aly tenor a graduate
student; Tommy Stark and J. H.
Reeves tenors; Pat Melton Baby
Forderhase Jeannette Sewell and
Carlene Baker sopranos and
Jerry Forderhase Bob Sorenson
and Randy Shaeffler baritones.
Accompanist is Gloria Pittman.
"La Boheme" is one of the most
popular of all grand operas rank-
ing with Verdi's "Aida." It is a
very major undertaking for
HPC's Opera Workshop. Dr. Har-
grave sang the role many times
while a member of the Metropol-
itan Opera Company of New
York.
LSB Makes Its
First Fall Trip
Seven members of the Life
Service Band represented the or-
ganization on its first extension
trip of the fall semester Septem-
ber 28-29 at the First Baptist
Church of Marble Falls.
The group led the Barnet As-
sociational Youth Rally Saturday
night and was in charge of the
Sunday morning church service.
Dickie Denson preached Satur-
day night and Jimmy Foster di-
rected the song service with
Linda Hall as pianist. Pat Brown
sang a special number and How-
ard Schutt gave his personal tes-
timony. Pat Ogle preached on Sunday
morning and the other members
of1 the team performed the same
duties they had Saturday night.
Life Service Band has planned
several trips this semester. Octo-
ber 5 there will be an extension
trip to Brady. October 19 mem-
bers will go to De Leon for serv-
ices. A trip to Paris is planned
after the Christmas holidays.

BOB WRIGHT
HPC Line Coach
Bob Wright Is
In Second Season
Bob Wright line coach is in
his second year at Howard Payne.
A real veteran in coaching cir-
cles Wright came here last sea-
son after serving as an assistant
coach at Brownwood High School.
On graduation from Howard
Payne in 1949 he moved to Ol-
ney High School where he served
as assistant coach for two sea-
sons. His next years were spent
in his coaching position at Brown-
wood High.
Like the other two Jacket
coaches Wright was an outstand-
ing player while a student here.
He played a guard position in
1946 was forced to nurse an in-
jury during the 1947 season and
came back to win his second
monogram during the 1948 cam-
paign. j
Wright like Coach Bennie Wil-1
liams is a stickler for all-out ef-1
fort and perfection and both are
fine leaders whom players are
eager to follow. Wright is the son
of a former HPC grid coach Fel-
ton (Pooch) Wright who is still
well known in state coaching
circles.
While at Olney Bob married '
the former Tylene Duncan of
Brownwood. They have two chil-
dren Robert 5 and Wilah Leigh
7. They reside at 1704 Eleventh
Street.
Cotton culture is thought to
have originated in India about

The duties of the floor and
wing directors are mainly to keep
the floors and wings quiet and to
report any violation that may oc-
cur. They are to assist those who
are in need.

clusion to the program.
"Rather than present half-time
pageantry of little or no value
we would like to recognize de-
serving persons and organizations
instead of having unmeaningful
shows" stated the band director
Mr. Ed Cain.
By special invitation the 50-
piece Coleman High School
Band directed by Mr. Ed Rike
will be on hand to participate in
pre-game ceremonies. This will
mark the beginning of featuring
delegates and bands at each
home game from local territory
for the express purpose of better-
ing our acquaintanceship with
them and vice versa.
