Notes

Photograph of 201 W. Kolstad taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. This 1-story brick-veneer house exhibits some architectural components suggestive of the Tudor Revival style, a movement popular during the late 1920s and 1930s. The house retains much of its historic character and integrity. Locally prominent architect Theodore Maffitt designed this dwelling for Sam and Marie Rollins around 1926. Fred Jones was the contractor. Mr. Rollins owned the Rollins Transfer Company (later the Rollins Transfer and Storage Company), which was a moving firm with offices on W. Spring. Local residents recall that Mr. Rollins originally used mules and wagons to haul freight, and that the animals were kept in an enclosure behind this house. All that remains of the pen today is an iron post, possibly from the gate. After her husband’s death in May of 1944, Marie Rollins continued to live here until 1964, when she sold the house to June B. Shaver. Marie died in May of 1966.
