JACKET -BEAR CLASH HIGHLIGHTS ANNUAL HOMECOMING
November 20 1941
r! ?SH I I
ime
We wish to pause here In the mid-
dle of the days activities to pay tri-
bute to the loyal and true blue exes
who arc on our campus today. Many
of them are cx-football players who
went through a lot for the glory of
the Blue and Gold. If It were not for
these men wo would not have the
Howard Payne that we have today.
Time Out wants to welcome them
back and tell them that each student
appreciates what they did for our
school in the years before our time.
Football Is a funny game. One
team may be on top one week and
In a couple of games they arc far
down the list. Take Texas for In-
stance they won several games in
a row and got the idea that they
couldn't be beat. They sailed along
fine until they met the spirit of Bay-
lor and Texas Christian. It was not
that the Bears and Hornfrogs were
better players It was that they had
the determination to hit hard and
keep on hitting hard.
Dizzy Dean has finally decided
not to give baseball another fling
he will be strictly a broadcaster from
now on. Lew Jenkins went out to
practice with the pro-football Giants
the other day and came back with
a black eye.
Many teams are having an off
week this week-end so I only have
four games to shoot at now. South-
ern Methodist and Baylor run to-
gether In Dallas Saturday and it looks
like a close game. If Wilson is ready
to go It may be too close for me
because I am picking the Mustangs
to win by one touchdown . . . Rice
will come to Fort Worth to play
TCU and after what the Frogs did
to Texas last week I'll be forced to
pick the Christians by a couple of
markers . . . Two games will be
played by Texas Conference teams.

The Pirates will be fighting harder
than ever at Georgetown and I think
the game will end in a tie . . . ACC
may have a let down this week after
the game with HPC last week but
should take tha St. Mary's Hattlcrs
by a couple of touchdowns or so.
The Masonic Home Masons were
dealt a killing blow when one of their
players was found to be ineligible
and they were forced to forfeit four
of their games. The Masons were un-
defeated and were favored to take
the state high school championship.
A little space given entirely to the
football playois. Lets take a lesson
from Texas. The team from Arkansas
may not have won all of their games
this year but they are good enough
to beat us if you don't play sixty
minutes of hard football. You have
brought plenty of glory to the school
and to yourselves so far this year
and Its no time to start losing now.
Texas Aggies And
TCU Lead SW Loop
Two teams that no one gave a
chance to finish on top of the South-
west Conference are now leading
the field. The undefeated and untied
Texas Aggies arc on top while TCU
who has been defeated only by the
Aggies arc in second place.
The biggest upset of the year the
lowly TCU Horned Frogs rose up
and pushed the Longhorns of Texas
University all over the field and
trotnped them into the hard earth
14 to 7. The Longhorns went from
the top team in the nation to seventh
in only two weeks. The Frogs meet
Rice Institute in Fort Worth next
Saturday in their next to the last
game.
Southern Methodist and Baylor
clash in Dallas to sec who takes over
the fourth position. SMU defeated
. Arkansas on their home field 14 to
7; while Baylor was taking it on the
' chin from Tulsa U 20 to 13.
Texas A&M continued their win-
ning streak by defeating Rice 19 to
G in a hard-fought battle at Houston.
Tcxus U and the Aggies have an
off week to get ready for their an-
nual battle on Kyle Field on the
27th.

All-Texas Conference football team.
After taking each position and
analizing the ability of each player
on each team we decided to choose
twelve men on our mythical team
seven linemen and five backs.
Although we may encounter some
criticism and be called unfair we
are picking as our all-conference
team the stinting line-up of the How-
aid Payne Yellow Jackets with the
addition of Tommy Samuels.
The end positions were dominated
by Roland Warren and Bob Stokes
all year long. Warren was the lead

the cunent year besides being n
standout on defense. Stokes played in

Two of the best defensive tackles
jn ue confeiencc have been chosen
when we pick Jim Potts and Melvln
Bot chert. Potts has played the best
ball of his career this year. Time
after time ho drove through the op-
posing defense to drop the ball car-
rier for a loss. Borcheit's name has-
not been mentioned much this year
nnd probably most sports writers
will overlook him but we have plac-
ed him on our team for his stead.
hard-working games. He covered sev-
eral fumbles and blocked one or two
punts duiing the year. "Moose" Is a
junior nnd is being depended upon
for a lot next year. Mahnn and Ad-
dington of TWC Brnley of McMurry
and McWhorter of Abilene Christian
rate special mention for their out
standing play during the year.
t guards wc have Bill Hinton
and Albert Crow. Hinton is a senloi
and Crow a sophomore "Julie" Hin
ton has been outstanding all ycai
with his hard blocking and fnst rush-
ing defensive woik. He Is one of the
best guards in the state at pulling
out of the line nnd running inter-
ference for the backs. Crow the
heaviest man on the team is anothei
player who has not had his name in
print very often but he has been u
vital factor in the line. Crow excells
in taking the interference out and
giving the linebacker a good crack
at the runner. Special mention shouu
also be given Collins and McCaulej
of TWC.
The best line backer in the con-
ference is Billy Ben David who play-
ed at center on our team. David is
Palmer King is our choice for block-
ing back. King is one of the haidest
blockers Howaid Payne has had in
sevcial years. Besides being a good
blocker he is also a deadly tackier.
The Yellow Jackets have two of
the best quartet backs In Texas.
Frank Fisher and Tommy Samuels
are really smart field-generals. Fish-
er is a senior and has lettered three
years previous to this one. He is
good on end runs and punt returns.
Samuels is a triple-threat back that
could make anyones football team.
His specialty as cveryono knows is
passing. His leaping passes have

stage for the first score. The Chris-
tians called on Jake Mulllns to get
them out of danger. He did his part
y kicking 55 yaids but Tommy Sam-
ids returned it 29 yards to the ACC
52 yard line.
It only took the Jackets four plays

play Samuels passed to Howard
Swann for only three yards Samuels
took the ball on the next snap and
flied the ball deep Into Wildcat ter-
ritory Buster Dixon ACC halfback

down. Jones' try for extra point was
wide and the score stood 6 to 0 in
iiivor of Howatd Payne.
During the rest of the first quarter
and through 10 minutes of the second
quarter Stokes kept the Wildcats
backed up in their own territory with
long accurate punts. When the Chris-
tians tried to punt from their own 31
ard line on third down Stokes
broke through from his defensive left
end position and blocked Mulllns'
punt. Melvln Borchett pounced on the
ball.
Stokes' pass intended for Warren
was batted down in the end zone but
his next pass to "Cyclone" Jones
was good for six more points. Jones
added the extra point from place-
ment and the Jackets led 13 to 0.
Content with a thltteen point lead
Howard Payne then went on the de-
fense nnd concentt nted on keeping
ACC from scoring The Wildcats hit
and drove and battel ed but the Jack-
ets kept them around mid-field on
all but one drive. The Christians
drove to the HPC 7 yad line once
only to lose the ball on downs.
Each team had a long touchdown
tun nullified by penalties during the
course of the game. On a spread for-

the line of scrimmage and he worked
his way through tho Jacket secon-
dary for 65 yards and a touchdown

In tho fourth quarter Samuels took
