With
Howard Payne and Texas Wesleyan continue to alternate years
of victories . . . Two years ago the Rams won both games of the
series between the two schools . . . Last year the Jackets were the
victors and this season the Fort Worth boys copped the two tilts . . .
The Jackets surprised quite a few conference fans with their victory
over Abilene Christian ... but there was no fluke victory about it
. . . the Wildcats were decisively and completely beaten.
The play-off series between the Wildcats and the Rams will be
very interesting . . . From here ACC seems to have the smoothest
running club . . . but the Rams
have the better all-around quintet
. . . Every man on the starting
TWC line-up Is dangerous . . .
the Rams are this corner's choice
to take the Texas conference
crown in the play-off.
Altho' he was a fair eager last
season Oiville Smith has im-
proved 100 per cent this winter
. . . Smith aside from having a
remarkable eye for the basket
plays one of the best and smooth-
est floor games In the conference
. . . His passing and defensive
work have been one of the out-
standing features of the Jackets'
games this season . . . Rowland
Michel plays better ball every
gome . . . Mick has developed into
a dependable basketeer.
From Abilene comes the report
that Harold Pcrsky and Stanley
McKeevcr two third-year regulars
on the ACC football squad have
icceived indefinite suspension by
college authorities for Infraction
of college rules . . . Whether they
will attempt to reenter or be per-
mitted to do so has not been de-
termined . . . but a nickel will
get you a half that they are back
in school before very long.
TCU is boosting Dean Bagley
freshman scatback as a rival of
Texas Jack Crain next fall . . .
and fiom Austin Bible reports
that Crain is looking better than
ever In the spring drills . . . Bay-
lor claims to have the most pow-
erful crew of driving backs seen
in many a day at the Waco school
. . . High school boxing is en-
joying a tapid rise in popularity
especially In the western part of
the state . . . Tiger John Hosea
fonner star athlete of TWC was
among the Fort Worth fans at
the game last Saturday night . . .
By the way the ball games held
in tho new gym to date have at-
tracted near capacity crowds . . .
many were the compliments heard

Recently we received a letter
from tho University of Texas'
Longhorn band stating that the
band together with the boxing
club of that school is sponsoring
a boxing tournament for college
boxers . . . The tournament will
be carried on under intercollegiate
and state regulations and will
probably be held March 19 and
20 . . . The bouts are open only
to amateurs ... in case any of
HPC's squared circle aspirants
wish to enter drop by the Yellow
Jacket office and we will furnish
the particulars.

BARN BREVITIES
Since the completion of the new
Physical Education building we
can't help but notice the reborn
spirit and interest in basketball
among the Howard Payne stu-
dents. Our basketball team Is
playing better ball too in the new
gym. Slim Wan en and Rusty
Smith get this department's choice
for places on the all-conference
team this season.
Boys over the Barn way are
taking an active interest In box-
ing of late. An intramural boxing
tournament might possibly attract
quite a bit of attention. Also the
bawling which faintly resembles
the noise emmitted by a lost calf
and which comes from the direc-
tion of the Barn is Pete Owens
trying to croon. It's possible that
someone slipped some bird's seed
in his diet and still it might be
the association Pete has been car-
rying on lately.
Impossible as I may seem Cris
Sunderman was homesick for his
mother last Saturday but the
weather kept him from going
home. However Jack Hardaway
and Gar Graves braved the wint-
ery breezes to visit their homes.
Listed now as the "Flying Cap-
tain" can be Burrhead Russel
captain-elect for the 1940 grid
season and also one of HPC's most
promising pilots.
Teaching Graves the finer points
of bridge proved costly to Corky
Jones. The net damage totaled up
to two torn shirts and a busted
radio anil Corky claims Nlggcr-
head still can't play. Still re-
ceiving quite interesting literature
from a fair' admirer at the dorm Is
Lightening Lawrence who Inci-
dentally worries a good bit about
It. Bill Hinton is being hailed as
tho campus' leading cave-man af-
ter ill affects in the form of a
broken rib were the result of the
latest of his numerous affairs.
Tomorrow a different atmos-
phere will prevail at tho Barn.
Spring football is scheduled to
start If the weather permits. There
is lots of truth in the saying that
ball teams are made or broken
during the spring training season.
