Baseball bisketbill and soccer share a quality
that belongs on the track speed
; At least that's what Oscar and Jos Meneses
sprinters learned while in Guatemala their
Jiftmc
-We were plajing soccer and running all ocr
Igp place one day and a coach saw us and told
Ii j we should run track" Oscar recalled
Oscar said his father plajcd soccer all his life
lflt their mother was not athletic Oscar began
!jifrining at age 15 JosS at 14
t ?"hc brothers run the 55 100 200 meters and
100 relay but enjoy the 100 meters most
jj Jit is just m favorite ccnt I just like it"
0car satd
jj JI like the 100 meters because of the small dis-
t-mcc and us fast" Josd said "1 don t like the
2g0 meters because ufe too long and 1 run the
360 meters better"
tj jThe men practice fie times a week for about
three hours
S JVe lift weights and on the track we tunc one
'iSy hard one day easy" Oscar said "Most of all
jtS repetitions of small distances and we work
'pit technique with starts "
Pscar said he has frustrations sometimes with
'irfjunes
lf ou work hard and get injured for one lit-
tle thing you cant compete or cant compete
how)ou want "
Jose said he Ins been healthy so far and likes
track because it makes him happy
"With breaks 1 get bored" Jose said "Its just

Oscar and Jose not only compete for ACU but
hac already represented their country before

"God has gicn me the ability and brought me
where I am so 1 will keep doing my best and
pla my part to use this ability to the best 1
can"
Oscar found information on ACU through
brochures and books on universities
Jose said he came to ACU because or Oscar
"1 wanted to come here to be w ith him "
Oscar and Jose attended the German School
of Guatemala in high school and also share
three languages between them
"We are tnlmgual" Oscar rcimrkcd "Spanish
was our first language German the second and
English last "
No wonder Oscar is ucd to lnndlmg tough
schedules
He said schedules are eas for athletes but
they tme to be disciplined
"Sometimes there is not enough time because
after classes there's practice and homework "
Jose said "You just have to set a schedule and
follow it real well to do good in both of them "
Both competed Saturday but Jose is the only
one who still has to qualify for nationals
because Oscar has already automatically quali-
fied for nationals
Oscar earned a NCAA Division II champi-
onship nng in 1997 his freshman car in the 4
X100 relay
They have competed against each other but
this only strengthens their relationship
"Wc ln c a close relationship and I encour-
age him to do his best" Oscar said "When he
doesnt run good it hurts me as well because I
am very proud of him
"Eventually I wouldn't have a problem with
him beating me because u just means he's get-
ting better and better"
However Jose feels confident of his perfor-
mance Saturday
"I am relaxed when I go to a meet because I go
in thinking I will do well no matter what hap-
pens" JosC said "I go with a winning mentality
and a positive mind
"I want to qualify for nationals but I had prob-
lems with my stnde - I'm not doing so good
with that"
Oscar said he tnes to concentrate on his
meets
"I try to focus as much as I can and forget
everything - I block out everything one or two
hours before" Oscar said "Every time l walk
into a meet l think I will run my personal best "
