Putting others before self
"Make me a servantLord make me
like youFor you arc a servantMake me
one tooMake me a servantDo what
you must doTo make me a servant
Make me like you."
At a Hillcrest Sunday evening service
a brother ended the testimony of his
faith in Christ by leading the servant
song. He told the audience his life had
been empty before he knew Christ and
that Christ is his reason for living.
He said he is equipping himself to be
a better servant for Christ in any area in
which he is led by God. Maybe he will
be preaching teaching or working in a
factory but anywhere a Christian goes
he can be a servant.
The testimony reminded me of my
Dad. He always emphasized to his three
children the importance of putting
other people's interests before their
own. Dad's favorite scripture for his
children was Matthew 20:26-28: "...but

Warm welcome delights honoree
To the Editor
The following note arrived in my office last week and I promised to share it
with you:
Dear ACU Alumni and Students
Thank you for the special honor in Chapel March 27. The picture has
a special place on the wall here at Wisteria Place.
Thanks again
"Aunt Nora"
Your warm welcome of such a delightful lady typified the kind of response
that has become the norm at ACU. Thanks to each of you who cheered her on
and loved her.

Visit impresses guest musician
To the Editor
March 13 and 14 1 had the pleasure of appearing as a clinician and guest
soloist with the ACU Symphonic Band. Gary Lewis director of bands at
ACU was my host for both highly successful and productive days.
The music majors at ACU are a highly motivated and talented group of stu-
dents. They were very friendly and responsive to my clinic and displayed a
fresh eagerness to learn. It was inspiring for me to have the opportunity to
work with students showing a maturity not often found.
Performing two solos with the ACU Symphonic Band was an enjoyable and
positive experience. The band is under the very capable direction of Lewis. He
is a fantastic musician and conductor. He works well with the students and
they expressed to me how much they enjoyed their music-making with Lewis.
He is one of the great young conductors in this country. ACU is most fortu-
nate to have a musician of his talent on its faculty.
This was my first visit to ACU and I was impressed by the campus the
friendliness of the students and the faculty. Having lived in the Washington
D.C. area for 15 years I thoroughly enjoyed the warm West Texas hospitality.
Congratulations on an outstanding music faculty. Your administration
should be very proud of the work the music department is doing.

What is a servant? One who expresses
submission recognizance or debt to
another. If we were all servants like we
should be the world would be a better
place. All our problems boil down to
whether we are willing to serve. Even
little everyday dilemmas.
Standing in lines. Sure everyone
hates standing in lines. What makes it
worse is that people cut in line and it
frustrates everyone. Why do some peo-
ple think they are better than everyone
else and should be able to move to the
front of the line?
Why do some people think they don't
have to abide by the rules set forth by
the university or the state or country in

It all goes back to being a servant.
If we were all servants yes me in-
cluded we would think about the peo-
ple who have been in line longer than
we have and therefore deserve to get to
the front before we do.
If we were servants we would abide
by the rules of the university even
when we didn't agree with them
because we are expected to obey them.
If more people-were servants we
wouldn't have as much crime or evil in
the world. We would stop thinking of
ourselves because we would be too busy

Candidate's ways suspicious
Wyoming never has been a hot-seat of
controversy. At least not in the 25-plus
years my family has lived there.
The Equality State's latest claim to
fame was the appointment of U.S. Rep.
Dick Cheney as the secretary of
defense.
Cheney Wyoming's lone repre-
sentative in the House was barely re-
elected last fall in a race which in-
dicated Wyoming's constituents wanted
him to pay more attention to his state.
Now five men are vying for his emp-
ty seat in the House including a
transplanted Californian who authored
an amendment to the Constitution that
proposed all non-European or non-
white persons be stripped of their U.S.
citizenship.
William Daniel Johnson moved to
Casper Wyo. March 19 and threw his
hat into the congressional race 10 days
later.
Johnson's campaign has incorporated
support from skinheads the Ku Klux
Klan and the Aryan Nations. But
Johnson says he's not a racist.
Last weekend I read with disbelief an
envelope full of newspaper clippings
my mother sent me. I find it odd that
is notable goal
serving others.
What about listening to someone
when they have a problem even though
you can think of a million other things
you need to be doing. Or losing a little
sleep to stay up and talk to a friend you
haven't seen all day. Or talking of God
and sharing your daily Bible study to
encourage someone else. Many times a
servant's duties go unnoticed and
maybe the servant will not receive a
thank-you note. But remember the one
leper who returned to thank Jesus for
healing him. Scrvanthood.
Selfishness is a prevailing problem in
our society today and probably has been
among humans since the beginning.
Adam and Eve wanted to see what they
could get out of the paradise God had
given them. When the serpent told Eve
she would be like God she ate of the
tree instead of obeying God. She
wanted to see what she could get out of
Airline bomb threats
should be made public
Elected and appointed officials
operate from a basic premise: the
duty of the government is to protect
the general health safety and
welfare of the American people.
On Dec. 5 1988 a man with an
Arabic accent called the U.S. Em-
bassy in Helsinki Finland to warn
officials a bomb would be planted on
a Pan American flight originating in
Frankfurt West Germany. The
public was not informed.
On Dec. 5 1988 decisions some
minute and others monumental
were made in the executive
legislative and judicial branches of
the U.S. government. The public
was fully informed in the Federal
Register Congressional Record and
U.S. Reports of each detail of each
decision.
As a Supreme Court ruling may
affect the lives of thousands bomb
threats have the potential to devas-
tate the lives of tens of thousands.
Aside from the basic governmental
function of informing the public the
Johnson would choose a state with such
a small minority population to spread
his venomous philosophy.
The special election for Wyoming's
House seat will be April 26. At this
point I'm not sure how the population
feels about Johnson.
Reports say Wyoming's state secre-
tary has received numerous calls and
letters from angry citizens. Johnson
shouldn't be allowed to move in and
run for office so quickly but there's no
law against it.
The most alarming part of Johnson's
campaign is the presence of the KKK
and other groups that take advantage of
the fears of struggling people like the
people of Wyoming's oil- and coal-
based economy.
It would be easy to blame the demise
of Wyoming's economy on the
minorities but the fact remains not

Mary Banks vj(fli
it.
We arc commanded to love our
neighbors as ourselves. I'm not saying
this is easy because it is not. And it
doesn't come right after the decision to
do it. It is something that must be
worked toward. Satan wants us to admit
to ourselves that we arc better than
anyone else and we should do
everything we can to put others down
so we can make ourselves feel better.
Get some water a basin and a towel
and wash the feet of others. You can't
imagine the effect it will have on you
your relationship with them and most
importantly your relationship with
God. It will make you realize what
Jesus did and what qualities we need in
striving to be more like Him.
"But the greatest among you will be
your servant. And whoever exalts
himself shall be humbled; and whoever
humbles himself shall be exalted."
tragedy of Pan Am Flight 103 sadly
drives the point home: the public
has the right to know through a
regular publication threats made
upon the American people via the
airline industry.
As government officials have
stated most bomb threats are just
that threats. Perhaps their reason
for secrecy is the belief that publiciz-
ing threats will lead to empty
airplane seats.
But let's give the American people
some credit. The majority of people
know most threats are void of any
danger. And statistics repeatedly
have shown traveling by air is on
the average more safe than traveling
by car. Publication of bomb threats
will not economically devastate the
airline industry.
What publication will do is inform
Americans of a potential risk. And
in light of the still-grieving relatives
of the victims of Pan Am Flight 103
shouldn't it be up to the people to
decide the real danger?
many live in the state.
Johnson's Pace Amendment promotes
the kind of narrow-minded paranoia
that Caucasian Americans were suppos-
ed to be over by now.
But Johnson's campaign is based on
that paranoia. He says he would be do-
ing the nation a disservice if he didn't
invite members of the KKK and
skinheads to help with the campaign.
Their white supremacist philosophy
that virtually calls for the deportation of
all non-whites reminds me of the Egyp-
tians when they tried to suppress the
nation of Israel. First the Egyptians
made the Israelites slaves then they
began killing Israelite babies.
Johnson claims he is a fundamentalist
Christian. Would his Christian faith
allow him to murder the children of
minority Americans?
Wyoming is known as the Equality
State because it was the first to give
women the right to vote. Wyoming also
had the first woman governor
To think the people of Wyoming
could possibly elect Johnson as their
representative alarms me.
They would be taking a huge leap
back into the Dark Ages.
