The March-April, 1980, issue of the Texas Business Review is a
particularly interesting publication. Published by the Bureau of Busi-
ness Research at the University of Texas, Austin, the issue is devoted
to a study of "Sunbelt Cities." Each of the eleven essays are written by
different scholars, and each essay treats a different subject. The topics
vary from "The Fiscal Health of Large Sunbelt and Frostbelt Cities"
to "Urban Service Quality and Residential Relocation in Dallas." This
issue is one that Association members will find particularly informative.
H. G. Jones, former director of the North Carolina Department of
Archives and History, has written Local Government Records: An
Introduction to Their Management, Preservation, and Use. Published
by the American Association for State and Local History, Local Gov-
ernment Records
is an effort to stimulate public officials to examine their current method
of coping with their record problems and to evaluate the benefits that may
be derived from a well planned program incorporating a variety of controls
such as inventories, retention and disposition schedules, microfilming and
intermediate storage.
The publication is divided into two parts. The first section dis-
cusses management and preservation, places record management in
perspective, notes the practical steps to take in establishing a local rec-
ords program, makes suggestions for coping with the large volume of
local records, and offers some case studies of local records programs
now in use. The second section of the book concentrates on the use of
local government records and offers a brief review of common types
of local records as well as a guide to local records research.
Local Government Records is available for $6.95 from AASLH, 1400
Eighth Avenue South, Nashville, Tennessee 3720o3.
The Hansford County Historical Commission (go South Townsend,
Spearman, Texas 7908 i) is currently compiling a history of the county
and is offering it to interested purchasers on a prepublication order
basis only. The price is $36.75 (for mail orders add $2.25 for postage).io8
