Cover: Market Plaza, by Thomas Allen, 1878-1879. Oil on canvas mounted on
panel. 26 x 39 inches. Courtesy the Wztte Museum, San Antonio.
Allen, an American artist trained in the United States, Paris, and Germany,
was much impressed with the Hispanic culture during his 1878-1879 vis-
it to San Antonio. His romanticized view of the Military Plaza shows the
San Fernando Cathedral to the east. The tree obscures the late nine-
teenth-century additions to the structure. For an account of the efforts
that went into building the church, which was then converted into the
cathedral, see "Sacred Space, Profane Reality: The Politics of Building a
Church in Eighteenth-Century Texas," an article by Adin Benavides,
which begins on page 1 of this issue.
