Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Midland. The site is open free of charge at the present time, while we try
to find and eliminate all the "bugs." After you look at the first twenty-
one volumes, let us know of any problems or suggestions that you might
have. As soon as we have it in what we consider to be good shape, we will
move to the second phase of the project with the digitizing of the subse-
quent volumes. You will continue to have access to the site as a member
of the TSHA, of course, but at that time, we may begin to charge others
for access in some way. We are presently discussing how that charge
might be assessed-whether by subscription or the purchase of individ-
ual articles. Launch of TSHA Online completes first phase of the
Association's Digital Gateway to Texas History.
In addition to the digitization of the Quarterly, the second phase of the
project will include an integrated search engine for both the Online
Handbook of Texas and SHQ Online, expanded K-12 resources, and an
expanded online bookstore. There are a number of other projects cur-
rently under discussion, but not yet decided upon. Suffice it to say that
TSHA Online will ultimately embrace our entire program and bring it to
many more participants than we are able to reach in person. It repre-
sents an ongoing commitment of the Association to collaborative pro-
jects aimed at expanding the quality and quantity of Texas history mate-
rials available to the public.
Meetings
The TSHA annual meeting program committee is seeking proposals
for the 2004 annual meeting to be held March 4-6, 2004, in Austin.
Committee Chair Kenneth Hafertepe is looking for papers on any
aspect of Texas history. Sessions at the annual meeting cover a wide
range of topics, and the 2004 meeting should be no exception.
The committee prefers that you organize complete sessions, as it is
rarely possible to work a single-paper proposal into the program. A com-
plete session proposal includes a chairperson and either three paper
presenters or two presenters and a commentator. All proposals must
include 1) the session title; 2) the names, addresses, phone numbers,
institutional affiliations (or hometowns), and brief (one-page) resumes
of the chairperson, presenters, and commentator; and 3) the title and a
short summary of each paper. Please prepare two copies of your com-
plete proposal and send one copy to Kenneth Hafertepe at P.O. Box
97154, Waco 76798-7154, and the other to George B. Ward, TSHA, 1
University Station Dogox, University of Texas at Austin, Austin 78712-
0332. Proposals for the 2004 meeting should be submitted by February
15, 2003, to be considered at the committee's first meeting, but no later446
