Remembering Tom Lea

The portrait ofJ. Frank Dobie was completed in the summer of 1953 during the
course of Holland McCombs' annual July Fourth campout at Wheelock, Texas.

visit military bases around the country to describe the troop training
that was then in progress. He promptly recorded a scene at nearby Fort
Bliss, then came to Fort Sam Houston and to Randolph Field in San
Antonio. The Fort Bliss scene was never published, but the second, at
Fort Sam, was prominently featured. The upshot was that he was invited
to cover and paint the North Atlantic Patrol, which was escorting ships
carrying Lend Lease aid to Great Britain.
While in the North Atlantic, word came of the Japanese attack on
Pearl Harbor, and Lea's attention quickly turned to the South Pacific.2001
