Second Floor Plan
First Floor Plan
Fig. 3. Gordon and Laub, Texas State Building for the World's Columbian
Exposition, 1892, not built as designed. First and second floor plans drawn
by the author after architect's plans as reproduced in the Galveston Daily
News, Feb. 21, 1892, and elsewhere.
The firm submitted this entry to a committee of the Texas World's
Fair Exhibit Association for inspection in Dallas on October 30, 1891.
Since Gordon's name is always associated with the design, it seems likely
that he presented the design in person. Another distinguished San An-
tonio architect who entered the competition, Alfred Giles, gave a first-
hand account of the proceedings, which took place on the grounds of
the Texas State Fair:
There were twenty-two plans submitted, all of the principle cities and towns were
represented. The committee carefully inspected the designs on Friday at their
meeting. They gave each of the architects present an opportunity to explain his
plans. After this had been concluded [new association president] Colonel H. B.
Andrews made a motion that four plans be selected from those submitted and
and Planning Library, the General Libraries, University of Texas at Austin. While it is possible
that it was associated with the competition-version rotunda, discrepancies between the plan and
the elevation drawing, as well as written accounts, makes this unhkely.July
