Opposite page: Henry Howe's Hzstorical Collectzons of the Great West, published in
1854, contained this woodcut entitled "View in the Ruins of the Alamo." The
quotation below the image of the crumbling Alamo walls notes the heroic sacri-
fices made by the men who died defending it. Contrary to what many people
believe, there were Tejanos-Texans of Spanish/Mexican background-who
fought and died for Texas's independence from Mexico. The preceding article
describes the recent discovery of Damacio Jimenez, a little-known Tejano who
died with his fellow Texas patriots at the Alamo.
