ized or intended. Such revelation appears to be an attribute common to
virtually all good autobiographies, and personal letters are, in a sense,
forms of autobiography.
The Fain-Bledsoe letters are presented here for the first time, to be
employed as the raw materials of social history or as pleasurable read-
ing-or both.

Dear Miss I hope you will pardon me for the liberty I have taken in
writing you this short letter I thought that I would have an opertunity
of meeting you again before leaving Shepherd and haveing a talk with
you. The subject of which I wish to talk to you about is a very serious
one and one that is to be well considdered and that the subject of matri-
mony. I feel very lothe to make a proposition on the subject seemingly
in so short a time after the death of my loveing companion but I have
done all for her that I can do more than to take care of and look after
the dear little children and I am fully convinced that I can do that
better by haveing some one to help me. Experience has taught me that
it is useless to try to live for the dead and the past but must live for the
future and the liveing allthough pathway appears dark and lonely I still
have a hope that the clouds may drift away and sunlight of pleasure an
happiness will once more shine upon my way and now Miss Jessie you
have been recomended to me by several as being a true and worthy
woman while others have spoken not so favorable as for my own obser-
vation and the limited acquaintence I have had with you I have formed
a very favorable opinion of you, and if what I have writen meets your
approvel after a due and deliberate consideration that you will frank
and plain in answering hopeing that you will excuse scrps of paper and
answer soon.
I am Respectfuly
yours D. H. Fain
