236 Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Wittliff describes the Southwestern Writers Collection at SWT as "a
place where the literary material of Texas and the Southwest will be not
only revered but used." The Austin writer-whose screenplay credits
include such movies as Country, Raggedy Man, and The Black Stallion, as
well as the CBS television adaptation of McMurtry's Lonesome Dove-
began the collection not only to help preserve the literary past but also
to inspire new writers of the region. Already included in the eclectic
collection are manuscripts and memorabilia from J. Frank Dobie, O.
Henry, photographer Russell Lee, Larry L. King, Gary Cartwright,
Willie Nelson, McMurtry, Beverly Lowry, Bud Shrake, and many others.
The collection will officially open in 199o, upon completion of the $27
million, seven-story library building at SWT. The collection will be
housed in its own quarters on the top floor.
