Southwestern Historical Quarterly
funding from sources that are already helping us. The Harrington
Foundation grant, which has enabled us to research and write most of
the articles for the Panhandle, expires at the end of May, and we are
applying to have it renewed for one more year. I believe we will be able
to wrap up the Panhandle section within another year. The Temple
grant for research in East Texas runs out at the end of 1988, and the
Stark Foundation grant for research in South Texas runs through May,
1989. We are also applying to the Texas Committee for the Humanities
for additional assistance.
Handbook "HISTORY OF TEXAS"
In an effort to share the material collected for the new edition of the
Handbook as quickly as possible-and to produce a well-researched and
readable one-volume history of Texas-the Executive Council voted
last year to publish the chronological overview articles commissioned
for the Handbook as a Handbook of Texas "History of Texas." All but one
of the articles have been received and are either being refereed or
edited. We anticipate receipt of the last article soon and hope to be in
production on the book by late summer, in order to have it published
by spring, 1989.
MEMBERSHIPS
We have produced a new membership brochure and have solic-
ited memberships via the 1988 Centennial brochure (funded by Dean
Robert King of the University of Texas at Austin College of Liberal
Arts), which we sent to Association members as well as to the entire list
of the University of Texas at Austin Ex-Students Association. We have
also distributed our membership brochures at the last two Book and
Paper shows in Austin, where we had a booth. Our membership now
totals 3,189, which represents a decrease of 130 since last March. Dur-
ing that time we have added 285 new members and lost 415 through
resignations and deaths. We have sent the new membership brochure
to the Membership Committee and will work with those individuals to
distribute the remaining copies.
Southwestern Historical Quarterly
The Quarterly has remained on schedule despite the fact that we are
now running several special issues that are longer than usual. We have
had to make several sacrifices and use outside editors to meet the dead-
lines. In addition, we have limited our footnote checking on some of
the articles.222
