Wayman Adams (1883-1959) was a nationally recognized artist when
he moved from New York City, the longtime site of his studio, to
Austin, Texas, his wife's hometown, in 1948. Adams was a skillful
watercolorist, lithographer, etcher, landscape and still-life painter, and
sculptor, but his specialty was portraiture. During his long and prolific
career he painted many famous subjects, including Hamlin Garland,
Theodore Dreiser, and Presidents Herbert C. Hoover, Calvin Cool-
idge, and Warren G. Harding. Prominent Austinites also were por-
trayed by Adams: Judge St. John Garwood, E. M. Scarborough, Clara
Driskill Sevier, Governors Allan Shivers and Beauford H. Jester, and
J. Frank Dobie, among many others. During the last decade of his life,
Adams and his wife, Margaret Boroughs Adams, were active in the so-
cial and cultural life of Austin. They were among the founders of the
Heritage Society of Austin, and their home, Encina Linda, was a gath-
ering place for the community's artists and intellectuals. Adams's strik-
ing portrait of Dobie was brought to our attention by Mr. Cliff Logan
of the Country Store Gallery, Inc., Austin, who arranged for the Asso-
ciation to use it on the cover of this special issue of the Southwestern His-
torical Quarterly, which celebrates the birth one hundred years ago of
Mr. Dobie and his friend and colleague Walter Prescott Webb.
