commission approved the temporary loan of 143 documents, including
the Travis letter, to the Committee on Historical Exhibits, Texas Cen-
tennial Central Exposition. On January 31, 1986, the administrative
successor to this body, the Texas State Library and Archives Commis-
sion, approved the return of the document to the site of the 1936 ex-
hibition under the most rigid protective security.79
The appeal "To the People of Texas & all Americans" is no longer
permanently displayed in the foyer of the Texas State Library; it is now
kept in the secure environment of the Archives Division stack area. An
exacting, one-of-a-kind facsimile occupies the specially constructed dis-
play case, under the eternal vigilance of a portrait of the man whose
words it immortalizes.
