extent" was the spicewood (Lindera benzoin [L.] Blume). Abundant
all along the river was a shrub he could not identify because it was not
flowering. A previously unidentified genus, the plant is now known
as the swamp privet (Forestiera acuminata [Michx.] Poir).38
