Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Territory, Kansas, and Missouri. At Hannibal, Missouri, they changed
to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy for Chicago. For the first
time during their trip Moore mentioned that they took a sleeping
car, so the reader assumes that sleeping cars were not available during
the Texas portion of their journey. They reached Chicago on Sunday,
February io, and again attended church services at Grace Episcopal
Church. They were much impressed by the many "fine, new" build-
ings and especially the Palmer House, which they conceded was the
"handsomest" they had ever seen. From Chicago they traveled east,
encountering snow and freezing rain, with very cold breezes from the
lake. After a stop in Erie, Pennsylvania, to discuss sawmill machinery
with the officials of an iron works there, they continued through "in-
tense cold" and finally reached Williamsport on February 13, after
an absence of nearly five weeks.39
