Mission Concepcidn, the cover picture of this issue of the Quarterly, is
from a watercolor by the nationally known architectural historian Wil-
lard B. Robinson. The artist/historian has given the original to the Asso-
ciation for the Anton Frank, Dudley R. Dobie, and Walter Rundell, Jr.,
Memorial Auction of Texana, to be held from 2:00-6:oo p.m. on Saturday
March 5, 1983, in the Castilian Room of the Shamrock Hotel in Houston.
The Association lost through death this past year many of its distin-
guished members. Two of them, Herbert Gambrell and George Brown, died
after the 1983 program was finalized. The three members to whom this
auction is dedicated were long active in the Association and had a great
love for Texas history. Father Anton Frank served as pastor of Annuncia-
tion Church in his native Houston, studied the history of that city, and col-
lected Texana. Dudley R. Dobie taught at several Texas institutions,
worked as a Texas dealer, and provided many rare items for other collec-
tors. Walter Rundell, Jr., studied at the University of Texas, taught at
major universities, and wrote about the Lone Star State, his native land.
We honor these members and all those gone before them with this auction.
This year's auction is a special one: the receipts will be used for the revi-
sion of The Handbook of Texas. The auction is also special because of the
extraordinary list of items that will be offered: manuscripts, books, maps,
documents, paintings, sculptures, Texas furniture, and weapons. Notable
items include a letter on annexation by Mirabeau B. Lamar; Texas Ranger
Sesquicentennial Commemorative pistol and knife, cased, by Smith and
Wesson; Stephen F. Austin's power of attorney to Samuel May Williams;
Reise durch die Vereinigten Staaten von Nord Amerika in dem Jahren 1818
und 1819, by J. V. Hecke (Streeter 10o8); a one-page manuscript letter
signed by Sam Houston, Thomas J. Rusk, V. E. Howard, and R. Scurry,
dated 1853; Nota estadistica remitida por el gobierno supremo del estado de
Coahuila y Texas..., by Rafael Gonzalez (Streeter 709), which summarizes
conditions in Coahuila y Texas in 1825; two etchings by Bernhardt Wall;
and many other works of interest.
Plan on attending this fine auction of Texana.
