Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Forsaking the broomstick for the club of good works and self-improve-
ment, as a post-Civil War journalist wryly phrased the change of times,
these ladies focused on elevating the quality of life for children and
providing intellectual stimulation for their community.
Organized chronologically with a chapter devoted to the term of
each president of the club, the book describes the concerns, fund-raising
activities, and the good times members had working together. Because
so many babies died in the withering summer heat, the ladies built the
"Baby San" (sanitarium) at Cloudcroft, New Mexico. When they could
finance a larger facility, the mountain site was converted into a camp
for underprivileged children. Other pilot projects that led to a broad-
based support included kindergartens, improved sanitary conditions
in schools, and the addition of physical education and manual training
to the curriculum. The Women's Club established a scholarship pro-
gram for girls to attend the University of Texas at Austin and con-
tributed money for special needs at the College of Mines and Metal-
lurgy, now the University of Texas at El Paso. Their community efforts
included successful drives for a public library, beautification of the
town, the removal of unsightly billboards, a juvenile court, a "Rescue
Home" for delinquent girls, a YWCA building, improved salaries for
teachers, and a revision of Texas education laws. The club also spon-
sored a wide variety of concerts, lectures, study groups, and social ac-
tivities. Readers will gain insight into a period when interesting women
could and did effect changes in their communities.430
