a biography of Jack Hayes and prepared an 8oo-page manuscript on the
great Ranger captain. Like many writers, however, he was unable to
find a publisher for the manuscript. Although excerpts appeared in the
San Antonio Express and the Brenham Daily Press, the full work was
never published.58
Among other unpublished manuscripts completed by Affleck were a
300-page account of the early American Indian, a i oo-page history of
Texas flags, the story of a gold-hunting expedition into Arizona, a de-
scription of a raid across the Mexican border in 1854 to capture Semi-

The manuscript apparently possessed merit. Years later, Afleck's son, Thomas D. Af-
Ileck, Sr., wrote to J. Evetts Haley, then a member of the University of Texas history de-
partment, asking for an appraisal of the work. Haley, in turn, requested his colleague,
Walter P. Webb, to read the manuscript. Although Webb believed some extraneous ma-
terial should be eliminated, he thought the work should be published. Webb noted, how-
ever, that under "present conditions it is difficult to find a publisher for any book, however
