rejoin the Calvary [sic] of his old com-
. mander. . . . He starts well mounted
on his bay-well equipped and
clothed."
Mrs. Thomas Affleck, and Dunnie had high hopes that he might win
advancement in the army. For the next several weeks Dunnie moved
about in the plantation country of the lower Brazos trying unsuccess-
fully to secure a military staff appointment. Here he was among rela-
tives and family friends as he sought out Confederate military authori-
ties. On December 22 he spoke about a staff assignment to General
Magruder who was visiting at Ellersly Plantation, the home of John C.
McNeel in Brazoria County. Magruder in turn referred him to Colonel
Francis R. Lubbock, the former governor of Texas, who was serving on
Magruder's staff in Houston. Young Affleck journeyed on to Houston,
where he served briefly as a civilian war clerk at Magruder's headquar-
ters.25
