The Eighth Texas Cavalry, the most famous Confederate horsemen from
the Lone Star State, were highly unorthodox in their clothing, equipment,
and armament. Terry (center) had a Mexican sarape for a saddle blanket and
a bearskin, used in lieu of an overcoat, tied to his saddle. Instead of the
regulation sabres and carbines, most of the men carried shotguns, Bowie
knives, and a generous assortment of Colt Revolvers (plus additional loaded
cylinders for the revolvers). They claimed to have greater firepower than any
other Civil War cavalry regiment, Confederate or Union; and they probably
did.
