The Smell of Oranges
So in those days as Christmas approached, the sewing, cooking, plan-
ning, and secrecy had every child bursting with excitement. No need
for trees or decorations in the home, we knew Christmas was near; it
was in the air, the very aroma of Christmas was everywhere. There was
no struggling with Christmas card lists for we knew nothing of the
custom then.The Daniell children (c. 1920).
It usually took us quite a while to drop off to sleep on Christmas Eve
after our stockings had been hung: we always hoped to hear Santa ar-
riving. Sleep we did, however, but nothing could induce us to stay in
bed later than 5 o'clock in the morning. We began, calling out to our
father to build a fire in the fireplace-and since Christmas was as much
fun to him as to us, he began bustling about with much clamor and
singing, prodding up the coals in the fireplace and putting on logs to
get a blazing fire going quickly. We soon surrounded him, emptying
our stockings and exclaiming over our simple gifts. Along with other
things, each stocking always included a new book and one special gift,
such as a pocket knife for a boy or a gold signet ring for a girl.299
