232 Southwestern Historical Quarterly
of Prince Carl von Solms-Braunfels, the colonizer. Most interesting is
the journal of Amanda von Rosenberg, an immigrant sailing from
Bremerhafen, Germany, to Galveston, Texas, in 1849 on the ship Fran-
ziska.
Mrs. Flach is by no means a dispassionate observer of the tradition
she relates, for she decries modernization and prays for the preservation
of a culture she has grown to love. "Forty years ago the surrounding
hills seemed to form a wall of safety and sanctuary," she mourns. "They
are no longer high enough" (p. 109).
Yankee in German America is not a history of the German settle-
ments in Texas, but it is a document that should be read by anyone
studying that history. Intended as an impressionistic account, it already
has proved of particular interest to residents of the hill country.
