An Indian mother and child.
Lipans on the north fork of the Nueces River. They killed three men,
captured nineteen women and children, 15o horses and mules, and other
supplies and equipment, some of which had just been issued to the In-
dians by their agent. It was obvious, particularly to settlers on isolated
farms, that the impoverished and angry Lipans would likely react to
this attack with violence. Ketumsee's band of Penateka Comanches
quickly learned of the capricious attack on the Lipans, and apprehensive
that a general Indian massacre was in the making, threatened to resort
to violence. But John Conner was able to calm Ketumsee, and the In-
dian agents persuaded the leaders of the destitute Lipans to come in to
Fort Martin Scott to meet with George T. Howard and John Conner.;,: !,<> :. .j!i..47 j:.<
