Affairs of the Association

ber of other scholars helped us read and evaluate more than sixty manu-
scripts during the past year. Of the papers submitted we accepted ten.
We appreciate the assistance of our readers and of our book review edi-
tor, Robert A. Calvert, for the fine work done during the past year.
ANNUAL MEETING
Close to 800o persons attended the Association's eighty-second annual
meeting held at the Stephen F. Austin and Driskill hotels March 2-4,
1978. The Memorial Auction of Texana netted $4,01 1.
At the business meeting on Friday, March 3, the members elected
the following officers: F. Lee Lawrence, president; Ben H. Procter, first
vice president; Ben E. Pingenot, second vice president. Archie P. Mc-
Donald and George R. Woolfolk were re-elected to serve a second three-
year term on the Executive Council, and Robert A. Calvert was elected
to a three-year term.
The Program Committee-Archie P. McDonald, chairman; Alwyn
Barr; John W. Crain; David B. Gracy, II; and James B. Renberg-put
together twenty excellent sessions. Seventy-three historians from fifty-
seven institutions and cities presented papers, chaired sessions, com-
mented on papers, or participated in panel discussions.
David B. Gracy, II, is chairman of the Program Committee for the
1979 meeting, to be held in San Antonio at El Tropicano Hotel,
March 8-10. Other members of the committee are Gorman L. Collier,
Fane Downs, Larry D. Hill, Archie P. McDonald, and Gwin Morris.
The Nominations Committee-Billy Mac Jones, chairman; John W.
Crain; Robert A. Nesbitt; W. H. Timmons; and George R. Woolfolk--
is now accepting recommendations from the membership for nominees
to serve on the Executive Council. Anyone wishing to make a recom-
mendation should write to a member of the committee. The chairman's

phis, Tennessee 38111.
AWARDS
The 1978 Coral H. Tullis Award of $500 for the most important book
in the field of Texas history went to Eldon S. Branda for his editorship
of the Handbook of Texas, Volume III.
The 1978 H. Bailey Carroll Award of $400 for the best article in Vol-
ume 81 of the Quarterly was presented to James R. Green of the Univer-113
