JUNIOR HISTORIANS
The Junior Historian program continued its growth pattern during
the past year. In the spring separate meetings were held for the junior
and senior high school members. Almost 1,300 students attended, ex-
ceeding last year's record by more than 1oo.
The growth in the entire program stems largely from the cooperative
support given the Association from around the state. Several colleges
and universities have offered workshops for students, sponsors, and pro-
spective sponsors. Local historical groups and Webb Society chapters
have assisted in augmenting the annual increase in participation. Leon
B. Blair, executive director of the Texas Bureau of Economic Under-
standing, has provided generous support for the program, through that
organization.
From July 1-24 the Institute of Texan Cultures at San Antonio is
displaying a select group of chapter exhibits. The Dallas Historical So-
city inaugurated a similar plan last October with a showing of Junior
Historian exhibits at the State Fair of Texas. Close to 2,ooo students
and sponsors gathered on October 23 at the Hall of State for the open-

las on August 4 and 5 at the Hall of State. The Workshop, jointly spon-
sored by the Association, the Dallas Historical Society, and the Texas
Bureau for Economic Understanding, is expected to attract in excess of
400 sponsors, prospective sponsors, and interested lay people.
At the annual meeting in Dallas, Mrs. Clara Elisabeth Bates-Nisbet
presented the Association with a generous gift to set up the Kate Hard-
ing Bates Parker Awards. The income from this contribution will be
used each year as award money for the junior historian program.
WEBB HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Walter P. Webb Historical Society, the Association's college-

dent by the large turnout of members and sponsors at the Society's an-
nual meeting in Dallas. The Webb Society holds its annual meeting
concurrently with the TSHA so that the former's members will be131
