The Handbook of Texas: A Supplement was one of the six books hon-
ored at a ceremony in which Mrs. Janey Briscoe, wife of the Texas gov-
ernor, presented the University of Texas at Austin with the four-millionth
volume for its library. The four-millionth addition was the two-volume
first edition of Noah Webster's An American Dictionary of the English
Language, published in 1828. A six-day countdown preceded the pre-
sentation, with one book being featured each day. The Handbook was
presented on the third of the six days. The University Tower, which is
usually lighted only for athletic victories, was a blaze of orange for this
new plateau in the South's largest library collection.
The East Texas Bicentennial Oral History Consortium has completed a
nine months' project funded by the Texas College Bicentennial program.
Interviews were conducted with seventeen individuals. Processing was co-
ordinated by Corrinne Crow at East Texas State University. Consortium
members at Texas A&M, Sam Houston State, and Texas Eastern studied
their institutions' histories; East Texas State, the history of railroading in
East Texas; and Stephen F. Austin State, veterans of World War I.
Nettie Lee Benson, professor of history at the University of Texas at
Austin, has received the Distinguished Service Award at a Conference on
Latin American History. The presentation was made during the annual
meeting of the American Historical Association, Washington, D.C., dur-
ing the Christmas holidays. Benson was recommended for the honor,
which has been presented only three times, by a committee composed of
Lyle McAlister, University of Florida at Gainesville; John D. Wirth, Stan-
ford University; and Ralph Lee Woodward, Tulane University. The cita-
tion reads as follows:
The nominee has performed distinguished service in the acquisition, organi-
zation, and dissemination of teaching and research materials in the field,
not only in her home institution, but through her work in national biblio-
graphical and library associations and programs. She has provided warm and
enthusiastic welcome and assistance to scholars of all ages and nationalities
working in University of Texas collections and has taught her skills to gener-
ations of students. She has made significant public contributions to Latin
American historiography and bibliography.430
