INSTITUTE OF TEXAS STUDIES
The Association and the Department of History, University of Texas at
Austin, again cosponsored a two-week summer course on Texas studies.
The Institute of Texas Studies program this summer provided lectures on
Texas from pre-historic times to 1865. This interdisciplinary approach to
the study of Texas has proved very popular with the junior and senior high
school teachers and junior college instructors from around the state, for
whom it is geared. The faculty and the topics of this year's Institute in-
cluded the following: Dr. Terry G. Jordan, "Geography of Texas"; Dr.
Keith Young, "Geology of Texas"; Dr. Thomas N. Campbell, "Indians
of Texas"; Dr. Dee Ann Story, "Archeology in Texas"; Dr. Marshall C.
Johnston, "Botany of Texas"; Dr. Carolyn P. Boyd, "Spanish Imperial-
ism"; Dr. Odie B. Faulk, "Spanish Texas"; Dr. Wilbert H. Timmons,
"Mexico, 18oo-i 836" and "The Texas Revolution"; this writer, "The Tex-
as Republic" and "Antebellum Texas"; Professor Willard B. Robinson,
"Early Texas Architecture"; Mrs. Martha D. Freeman, "Pictorial Arts of
Texas"; Mr. Lonn W. Taylor, "Material Culture of Texas"; Dr. Delmer
D. Rogers, "Early Texas Music"; Dr. Randolph B. Campbell, "Slavery
in Texas"; and Dr. Ralph A. Wooster, "Texas in the Civil War."
AWARDS
The 1976 Coral H. Tullis Award of $300 for the most important con-
tribution to Texas history was presented to Ronnie C. Tyler for his book,
The Big Bend: A History of the Last Texas Frontier.
Mrs. W. D. White an Mr. John L. Tullis, daughter and son of the late
Coral H. Tullis, contributed an additional $4,000 to the Tullis fund,
making the total $Io,ooo. The Tullis Award for 1977 will be $500.
The 1976 H. Bailey Carroll Award of $200 for the best article in Vol-
ume 79 of the Quarterly was presented to David M. Pletcher of Indiana
University, for his article, "Consul Warner P. Sutton and American-
Mexican Border Trade during the Early Diaz Period."
The Association's first annual Leadership Award of $I,ooo went to
Rupert N. Richardson, dean of Texas historians, for his outstanding con-
tribution to the understanding of the American way of life.
The Ernest Wallace Award for the best article on West Texas in Vol-
ume 79 was presented to William R. Johnson for his article, "Rural
Rehabilitation in the New Deal: The Ropesville Project."130
