Politics in antebellum Texas, then, combined elements of democracy and
aristocracy. Furthermore, Texas political life was not unlike political ar-
rangements elsewhere in the antebellum United States. For that matter, a
systematic comparison of the economic status of political leaders with that
of the general population in the contemporary United States may well
reveal the same type of domination by an economic aristocracy.
