Preliminary conclusions indicate little black strength in the local Re-
publican ranks. Since several of the Union veterans were residing in
Texas before the war only about 5 percent of this list can be deduced
as carpetbaggers. Further checks against the census of 186o and county
records would refine the carpetbag potential. Scalawags appear to have
made up the bulk of Republican strength, but their numbers, by this
survey amounting to approximately 80 percent, might be reduced
somewhat by the last mentioned procedure. In any case a majority of
those who consistently appeared in loyalist references were probably
scalawags. Who they were is fairly clear, though this exercise produced
only the most prominent of them. How they adjusted-remaining loyal
Republicans, joining the Democratic party or protest fusions-after "re-
demption" may be easier to ascertain through their identification.320
