Cover: "Texas Navy Leaving Galveston, I837" by Emil Bunjes. Bun-
jes (90o2- ) painted the cover scene especially for this issue. Born
in Schulenburg, Texas, he went to Galveston in 1924 and worked
as a bookbinder. Several years later Bunjes began making pen
sketches of the island city and has become well known for his ability
to capture the unique spirit of what remains of the "Galveston
era." In preparing the watercolor for the July Quarterly, Bunjes
was able to draw from his extensive knowledge of the Texas Navy
and its ships. Four of his line drawings are reproduced later in the
journal.
