Answer. Where his family resides of course.
Question. Does Mr. Means family reside in Texas?
Answer. Not that I am aware of, Sir.
Question. Of what Country is Mr. Means a native?
Answer. I do not know.
Question. When did he first come to the South?
Answer. I do not know when he came South, he came to Texas,
I think, to my knowledge, about twelve or eighteen months ago, I
am not very sure but that it may be two years.
Question. Has he ever brought his family to the South; and from
your knowledge, of Mr. Means, has he any sympathy for the Con-
federate States?
Answer. To the first, I do not know whether he ever brought his
family South; and to the latter, I do not believe he has.
Question. Do you know of Mr. Means having brought any letter
and late papers from the North when he last came here, if so, state
what you know in connection therewith?
Answer. No, Sir, I do not.

witness on the part of the prosecution was duly sworn.
By the Judge Advocate.
State what you know in regard to the subject matter of the Charges.
Answer. About a year ago I was appointed the Receiver of a Stock
of goods in which Mr. Means was said to be interested and then
became acquainted with him, had seen him before for about a year,
but then became acquainted with him. In transacting the business
of Receiver I was there a good deal with Mr. Means and his at-
torney who had charge of the business of the firm of which Mr.
Means was a Member. The Case was expected to come up in Sep-
tember 1861, but in consequence of the trouble and there being no
judge of the Court, the Attorney advised Mr. Means to send, or
go North, to Boston, I think, to get some necessary papers, to prove
his interest in the goods in question. Mr. Means left for that pur-
pose about the 5th of September, 1861 and with the exception of
a rumour of his being sick at the North, I knew nothing of him
until his return here with the papers. He came back sometime in
the first of April 1862.
Question. Did Mr. Means claim an interest in the goods, of which
you are the Receiver, in his own right or that of a firm of which
he is a Member and where was the place of business of that firm?
Answer. He claimed as a Partner in the name of Means and Mulli-
kin [Mulliken], that firm's place of business was Boston, Massachusetts.
Question. Why was it necessary to obtain an agreement from the
Northern Partners, to establish his interest in the goods?628
