For Stephen F. Austin the mission to the United States was
the crisis of his career. At that point he made the irrevocable
decision to "go for independence" and to declare his position
publicly. The Louisville Address kept him in the main stream
of Texas history. This he assuredly recognized when he wrote
to Mrs. Holley that its publication was "important to the cause,
and to me individually."
