Whereas, Dr. H. Bailey Carroll has resigned as Director
of the Texas State Historical Association for reasons of
poor health; and
Whereas, He has devoted his life to the cause of Texas
history; and
Whereas, He has stimulated interest in and generated
enthusiasm for Texas historical scholarship among thou-
sands of Texans; and
Whereas, He has cherished the lamp of Texas history
received by him from George Garrison and Eugene C.
Barker and passed it to scores of dedicated scholars; and
Whereas, He has served this Association faithfully for
nearly a quarter of a century; and
Whereas, His ceaseless efforts have contributed to the
growth of this Association into one of the largest state
historical associations in the nation and made the South-
western Historical Quarterly an editorial model for all
such journals; and
Whereas, He has successfully promoted the financial de-
velopment of the Association; and
Whereas, He pioneered the Junior Historian Movement
in Texas and has worked tirelessly for more than a quarter
of a century to build it into one of the most effective or-
ganizations of its kind in the country; and
Whereas, This Association and the officers and members
of the Executive Council thereof will sorely miss his guid-
ance and wish to pay homage to these services he has ren-
dered; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Texas State Historical Association at
its annual meeting of April 29-30, 1966, does hereby ex-
press its profound gratitude and sincerest best wishes to
Dr. H. Bailey Carroll and does direct that copies of this
Resolution be printed in the Southwestern Historical
Quarterly and distributed among appropriate personnel,
and educational and historical agencies.
