ultimate outcome was that Hunter sold his land on Rightor's
(Morgan's) Point12 and moved to the vicinity of Stafford's Prairie
House, in what is presently the eastern part of Fort Bend County.'Y
In addition to handling such cases, Jackson, at Austin's direc-
tion, also assisted in settling probate matters. His jurisdiction
likewise included criminal cases, but there were few. In 1825, he
heard a charge against Thomas Earle for removing ropes and
blocks from the ubiquitous schooner Mary.4
Jackson did not relish his job as alcalde. He entered the office
with misgivings, but a short while later he thought the position
would be less of a nuisance than he had expected.'" After the
Mary case he complained that he was completely tired of the job
and looked forward to the approaching end of his term, when
he would be no more than a good citizen again.'6 Despite that
hope he served until 1828, when the government of the colony
was reorganized. During all of that time, he assiduously executed
the promise he had made more than two years after he assumed
office: "I will [do all] that lies in my power to ceep [sic] harmony
in the Dist[rict]."'
On February io, 1828, Jackson, together with the other district
officials, met with Austin at San Felipe to canvass the votes of the
primary election for the Municipality of Austin.8 In the election
Jackson received ninety-six votes for the position of regidor and
was declared elected.19 He served in that capacity until January
1, 1829, when his successor qualified.20 At the municipal election
