Southwestern Historical Quarterly
In the heavily populated Galveston-Houston area the Gal-
veston Weekly News hammered away in support of the American
ticket and its Unionist platform. It seemed to foretell what lay
ahead: "We have no heart to dwell upon the theme [of disunion].
Our minds sicken when we think of the fratricidal war which
would be the inevitable consequence of the disruption of the
Republic."" Such feeling in the area was not limited to the editor
of the News; Fillmore received over 40 per cent of the votes
cast in both Galveston and Harris counties.1" But when all the
votes were counted, it was seen that Fillmore lost Texas' electoral
vote by approximately two to one. The vote was Buchanan, 31,995
and Fillmore, 16,oIo."
Fillmore's strength came from widely scattered counties, which
makes it difficult to analyze except to say he ran poorly. Only in
the following counties was his vote as much as 40 per cent of
the total."
