The Delegates to the Convention of 1875 27
been Secretary of State of the State of Texas, and F. S. Stockdale
had served as Lieutenant Governor of Texas.
County offices had been filled by many of the delegates: for
example, G. B. Cooke (clerk), George McCormick (clerk), W.
P. McLean (attorney), and L. S. Ross (sheriff). P. Paule of Lee
County was a United States Postmaster.
The Convention of 1875 was composed, therefore, of a much
abler group of men on the basis of their previous experience and
training than is generally conceded. Their background and train-
ing compares favorably with that of the delegates to any previous
constitutional convention held in Texas. If their product is in-
ferior, then the cause must lie elsewhere.
