spiracy of senior army officers seeking to overthrow Madero and
take over the government for themselves. Again, don Bernardo
was destined to fail, but this time fate was kind and spared him
from further taunts. Leading the attack on the National Palace
on the morning of February g, 1913, Reyes was killed instantly-
the first to fall in the worst carnage that the main plaza of Mexico
City had ever seen. For don Bernardo, it was a death that he
sought and in the way he wanted it-astride a big, black horse
leading his men into the fight.
