TRUE MILESTONE IN TEXAS HISTORY was reached with the
organization of the East Texas Historical Association on
September 29, 1962, at Stephen F. Austin State College
in Nacogdoches. The purposes of the association are to collect
historical materials on East Texas, to preserve historical buildings
of the area, and to publish a journal of East Texas history. All
persons joining the association before its first annual meeting in
the fall of 1963 will be charter members.
Officers include F. Lee Lawrence of Tyler, president; John T.
Duncan of Bryan, Vivian H. Hackney of Marshall, Robert Patten
of Jasper, C. M. Langford of Mount Enterprise, and Robert S.
Maxwell of Nacogdoches, vice-presidents; Mrs. Jimmy Sheffield
of Nacogdoches, secretary-treasurer; Mrs. W. H. Bridges of Ro-
ganville, J. L. Clark of Huntsville, Ralph Steen of Nacogdoches,
Seth R. Walton of Marshall, and Mrs. Guy Blount of Nacog-
doches, directors. C. K. Chamberlain of Nacogdoches heads an
editorial board which includes Ralph Goodwin of Commerce,
James L. Nichols of Nacogdoches, Mrs. Charles Martin of Kirby-
ville, and John Payne, Jr., of Huntsville.
The Texas State Historical Association, the oldest learned so-
ciety in Texas, heartily welcomes this fledgling into the swelling
ranks of regional and local historical societies, which almost com-
pletely blanket the state since the establishment of the East Texas
association. On this auspicious occasion it seems proper to attempt
a "Spring Roundup" of regional and local historical societies in
Texas. Certainly to be included in such a listing are the Bastrop
Historical Society, the Bell County Historical Society, the Dallas
Historical Society, the El Paso County Historical Society, the
Erath County Central Texas Historical Society, the Fort Stockton
Historical Society, the Galveston Historical Society, the Grayson
County Historical Association, the Harris County Historical So-
ciety, the Harrison County Historical Society, the Heritage So-
ciety of Waco, the Laredo Historical Society, the Navarro County
