One of the founders, and first chairman of the board of Texas'
first trust company, Barziza spent his latter years in Houston as
a businessman and lawyer. He enjoyed an extensive criminal law
practice and was an acknowledged leader of the Houston bar.
Noted for his conviviality, as well as his good breeding, education
and polished manner, he was in great demand socially.
He died in 1882, at the age of forty-three.
There is today a Barziza Street in the Eastwood section of
Houston;1 a portrait of Decimus et Ultimus Barziza hangs in the
"Hall of Fame" of the Harris County Civil Courts Building;'
and a dozen Barzizas," descendants of a brother, are listed in the
Houston telephone directory. The Barziza family plot, in which
the eminent lawyer and numerous members of his family4 are
buried, is in Houston's Glenwood Cemetery. Yet to most modern
Houstonians, as to practically all present-day Texans, the name
of Decimus et Ultimus Barziza is simply a nominal curiosity.
This extraordinary name is quite in keeping with the man
1This street, in an area where D. et U. Barziza once owned much property, runs
two blocks, from Stonewall Cemetery, north, to Harrisburg Road.
2A portrait of D. et U. Barziza hung for many years in the old Harris County
Courthouse. When the courthouse was renovated, to become the Harris County
Civil Courts Building, the old portraits from the county "Hall of Fame" were re-
touched and reframed. They presently hang in the Jury Assembly Room. Of a score
of these, only four were for years unidentified. One of the unlabeled portraits has
been recently identified as that of Barziza.
