William Actae's /Narrative of the
1agee-A4ticrrez ExpcditioH, 1812-1813
Edited by HENRY P. WALKER
T HE MAGEE-GUTIERREZ FILIBUSTERING EXPEDITION INTO
Spanish-held Texas in 1812-1813 is well known to students
of the history of the American Southwest. It has been pre-
sented accurately in Julia Kathryn Garrett, Green Flag Over Texas,
and Harris Gaylord Warren, The Sword Was Their Passport, and
in a number of articles in historical journals. In the latter part
of the nineteenth century it also provided the theme for at least
three works of fiction: Hiram H. McLane, Irene Viesca; Timothy
Flint, Francis Berrien, based on the reminiscences of Henry Adams
Bullard, a member of the expedition; and Hesper Bendbow,
pseudonym of George W. Archer, More Than She Could Bear,
based on the histories of Kennedy and Yoakum.'
As far as is known, no official records or journals of members
of the expedition have been located. As a result, the historian must
rely largely on the reminiscences of various participants written
twenty to forty years later and to which time had probably added
something of the rosy glow of a mature man looking back on the
follies of his youth.
The narrative here presented was published in 1860-1861, in the
San Antonio Tri-Weekly Alamo Express, where it was found by
Rex W. Strickland, professor of history at Texas Western College,
who turned it over to the writer for editing and annotation. The
Alamo Express, a strong Union paper on the eve of the Civil
'Julia Kathryn Garrett, Green Flag Over Texas (New York, 1939); Harris
