letters, so basic to and descriptive of the activities of the period
in which they were written?"
Her inspiration has been fulfilled and work on the arrange-
ment and description of the collections is proceeding with all
expedition. Tentative estimates indicate that not less than two
years will be required to gain effective control of the priceless
historical trust that has been developed in the Archives since the
initial collections were deposited in 1898 and 1899. When the
guide is ultimately reduced to final manuscript form, thanks to
Mrs. Bonham's significant perception, plans have been formalized
for immediate publication and distribution.
The deep interest in Texas history and the dedication to its
preservation and interpretation that are vividly evidenced in this
support of a historical project of incalculable potential are solidly
rooted in Mrs. Bonham's family heritage. A descendant of the
Dieterichs of Travis County who were closely associated with the
development of Austin from the city's beginning during the
period of the Republic of Texas, she has shared her own fine
appreciation and understanding of the past and its continuing
influence through numerous notable contributions to the pro-
motion of a more vital awareness of the Texas heritage. Highlights
of Mrs. Bonham's career of public service and scholarship include
the publication in 1958 of her Merchant to the Republic, a study
of the career of her great-grandfather, Francis Dieterich, and
especially her several years of outstanding service as special con-
sultant on Texas history with the San Angelo Public School Sys-
tem and the adjacent Lakeview System.
Working closely with Charles B. Watts, co-ordinator of second-
ary education, San Angelo Public School District, Mrs. Bonham
was in truth the dynamic force behind the production of a pub-
lication that has elicited enthusiastic support and acclaim from
educators and community leaders throughout the state. Entitled
Texas Week: San Angelo Public Schools Salute Texas History,
March 2-8, 1962, the publication represents an exhaustive treat-
ment of the subject the Flags of Texas, accompanied by a brief
history of the Texas Seal and numerous teaching suggestions and
sources for emphasizing the history of Texas. Of the project,
Superintendent G. B. Wadzeck of San Angelo declared:169
