of Texas. It houses more than three million documents available
for research, publishes the manuscript archives, and assists those
interested in gaining knowledge about the history of the state.
Legislative Reference Division, directed by Doris Connerly, is
the technical library for the executive, legislative, and depart-
mental agencies of state government. It is a source of almost
unlimited information available to all Texans.
Records Division, directed by David Erck, is responsible for
receiving, examining for archival use, filing, and indexing all
state records not in current use. The program is available on a
request basis, to all state agencies.
Rural Library Service Division, directed by Harold J. Mar-
burger, is directly responsible for promoting library development
in the rural areas of Texas. This division will assist any Texas
community in establishing a municipal library, or in the forma-
tion of a county library. It will also assist in establishing rural
library service from an existing city library or it will assist in
extending library service to neighboring counties via an estab-
lished city or county library. Its professional staff is available for
workshops on library development.
Texas State Library's goals may be summarized as: "Library
service for all Texans and a stronger State Library as the focal
point of statewide library service," Winfrey explained.
Visitors are urged to see displays in the building and to use
the facilities offered. Hours are: 8 to 5 Monday through Friday
and from 8 until 2 noon on Saturdays.
"All state employees are especially urged to use their State
Library," Winfrey concluded.
Through the generous foresight of Mrs. Eugene (Dora Die-
terich) Bonham, prominent civic leader of San Angelo, the long
needed key to the storehouse of invaluable documentation de-
posited in the Archives of the University of Texas Library has
at last been assured. A working historian in her own right, Mrs.
Bonham first noted the necessity for a guide while being con-
ducted through the Archives in 1950. At that time her thought
was "How will this collection of manuscripts be made known to
the many persons who should be writing about these original
