Southwestern Historical Quarterly
The book will be valuable to students of Texas history for a
long time to come, and they will look forward to Fornell's book
on the Civil War in the Gulf of Mexico.
It is observed that many of the illustrations (which are excel-
lent) by Lowell Collins are taken from records in the John Win-
terbotham room of the Rosenberg Library, Galveston. It may
be unfortunate that Fornell did not have the opportunity to
know his fellow-Wisconsinian, John Winterbotham, who ardently
loved the Island, its history and its people, and for whom the
room was named following his many years of service as a trustee
of the Rosenberg Library.

Catholic Archives of Texas, History and Preliminary Inventory.
By Sister M. Claude Lane. Houston (Sacred Heart Domini-
can College), 1961. Pp. x+ 114. Map, appendices, bibliog-
raphy. $4.00.
It is the sad fate of most theses written for the attainment of a
master's degree or even a doctorate to be filed away and to be
forgotten. The thesis Catholic Archives of Texas, History and
Preliminary Inventory by Sister M. Claude Lane, does not deserve
such a fate. To this reviewer, who followed the origin, the devel-
opment, and finally the completion of the seven volume monu-
mental work of the Texas Knights of Columbus Historical Com-
mission known as Our Catholic Heritage in Texas, 1z59-z936,
this thesis has been a revelation. As a story it is fascinating to
any student of Texas history. As the work of a highly competent
and devoted librarian, it is inspiring. It is a story that Texas
historians should know, for these valuable archives have not yet
found a permanent home. Through the courtesy of His Excel-
lency Bishop Reicher of Austin they are now stored in the base-
ment of the Chancery Office of the Austin Diocese, not completely
catalogued and indexed, and thus not ready for research under
normal library conditions. This is deplorable because the archives
contain recent discoveries of materials not heretofore known even
to the scholars; materials pertaining not only to the history of
the Catholic Church in Texas, but to the secular history of Texas
and of the entire Southwest as well.61o
