from that time on gave no more trouble. All those eighteen or
twenty miles from near the Brite ranch they hardly walked at all.
They were fine horses.
At the Brite ranch a Mexican wanted a new hat, so the hack driver
was commissioned to get it. Several other errands he had too. A lady
came out-probably the one we did not see that day, and the little
girl-the owner of the dolls I saw in the barn, I suppose. We spoke
to each other-the other woman and I-and I wondered whether
she knew we were the people who had slept in the barn. We did not
see Mr. Brite or "Sam." Sam would have been disappointed had he
learned that our harness was already sold. I was tempted to leave
word that we had sold our burros and buggy to a man who pre-
ferred them to an automobile. I wondered how many eggs Sam and
Mr. Brite had for breakfast. (Sam cooked nine for Mr. Brite and
himself for supper that night.)
